Places To Visit In Kottayam:

 

• Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple: This is a famous temple in Kottayam, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was built by Raja of Thekkumkar in 16th century in South Indian style of architecture. The sanctum is adorned with various scenes from Hindu epics. The murals on the walls offer a retreat to your eyes. During the annual festival time held in the month of March, pilgrims from various parts of Kerala throng this temple.

Cheriyapally: Cheriyapally or St. Mary’s Church belongs to the Malankara Orthodox Christians. It was built in 1579 by Raja of Thekkumkar for his Christian subjects. It boasts of temple architecture influences. It is a fine blend of Kerala and Portuguese style of architecture. The walls of this church are decorated with beautiful murals, depicting both biblical and non-biblical themes.

Thiruvarpu Temple: Thiruvarpu is another famous temple in Kottayam. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The annual festival lasting ten days and the Vilakkeduppu festival are celebrated in a grand manner here.

Kottathavalam: Kottathavalam is an excellent tourist spot in Kottayam district. It is a splendid cave carved out of a rock face in the Murugan hills. It was the resting place of the royal family of Madurai, on their way to a pilgrim center. You can see several statues and sculptures of Lord Murugan and other gods.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary: Kumarakom bird sanctuary is located twelve kilometers away from Kottayam. It houses rare bird species like heron, Siberian stork and teal. The nearby Vembanad Lake is great for enjoying backwater cruises.

Nadukani: Nadukani is one of the splendid tourist spots in Kottayam district. Trekking in Nadukani hill offers you a rejuvenating experience. The lush green region surrounding the hill offers a feast to your eyes.

Pallipurathukavu: Pallipurathukavu is located eight kilometers away from Kottayam. It features a beautiful temple, dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. Kumbhakta Mahotsava is the major festival celebrated here and it attracts thousands of devotees.

Subramaniya Swamy temple: Subramaniya Swamy temple is located 25 kilometers away from Kottayam city. It is believed that the idol of Lord Subramaniya came out of a pot carried by the great saint Maharishi Gauna. Inside the temple complex, there is another temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Pathiramanal Island: Pathiramanal Island is located on the border of Kottayam district. Pathiramanal means sands of night. It is a beautiful island, where you can enjoy viewing rare varieties of birds, including Night heron, Darter, Indian Shag, purple heron, Whistling duck, cattle egret, pintail ducks and stork billed kingfisher.

Kottayam does not have an airport and the nearest international airport is located at Cochin, which is approximately 80 kilometers away.
