Kozhikode also known as Calicut is the third largest city in Kerala. The name “Kozhikode” is derived from the words Koyil (temple) and Kotta (fort). However, the foreigners called it Calicut or Kalifo.

The famous Portuguese explorer Vasco d agama set foot on India on the Kappad Beach in Kozhikode.

The unspoilt beaches, cascading waterfalls, dams and natural parks make it a prominent tourist spot in Kerala.

 

Places To Visit In Kozhikode:

 

Kozhikode Beach: Kozhikode beach is renowned for watching mesmerizing sunsets. You can see two sea piers that extend well into the sea here. The lighthouse offers awe-inspiring views of the seashore and Arabian Sea.


Dolphin Point: Dolphin point is located near the Kozhikode beach. You can see dolphins playing and jumping in sea water here.

Kappad Beach: Kappad Beach is located 16 km away from Kozhikode. There is a historical monument that commemorates the historical landing of Vasco De Gama. You can also see an ancient temple on the hillock, facing the sea here.


Mananchira Square: Mananchira square is one of the most fabulous spots in Kozhikode. It is a palace tank of King Vikrama. The main courtyard of the Zamorin ruler’s palace was converted into a gorgeous park. Various temples, churches and mosques are located around the square. You can see several traditional Kerala houses and a water reservoir. The maidanam or ground is beautiful with lush green lawns and the entire complex is surrounded by a laterite sculpted wall. An artificial stream, an open air theater, a music stage and a musical fountain can also be seen here.


Beypore: Beypore is a small, yet beautiful coastal town in Kozhikode. It was initially known as Vayapura. Later, Tippu Sultan named it Sultan Pattinam. It features a port and fascinating beach. Beypore is well known for building strong wooden ships, which are bought by Arab merchants for trading and fishing.


Pazhassi Raja Museum and V.K. Krishna Menon art gallery: This museum is located six kilometers away from the Kozhikode town. It exhibits various items like old coins, models of various temples, antique bronzes and megalithic monuments. Mural paintings in this museum attract hundreds of tourists from all over the country. V.K.Krishna Menon art gallery is located next to the museum. Krishna Menon was a defence minister and the items having association with him can be found here.


Tusharagiri Waterfall: This is an awesome waterfall that is located just 48 kilometers from the Kozhikode town. It is renowned for its natural charm and serenity. Watching the waterfalls from a great height offers an overwhelming experience.

By Air

The airport at Calicut is at Karipur, which is almost 27 kilometers east of the city. There are regular domestic and international flights that are operated from this airport


By Rail
There railway station is located around 16 kilometers from the city and there are a number of local and inter-state trains that stop at this station.

By Road
There is a wide network of roads that connects Calicut to other parts of Kerala and other states
