Palakkad is a small, yet beautiful town in Kerala. It is known as the gateway of Kerala.   The name Palakkad is derived from the words Pala, a sweet scented flower and Kaadu (forest).

It connects Kerala to the plains in the state of Tamilnadu. It has the biggest mountain pass that divides the two folds of the Western Ghats.  

It is renowned for its historical background. The lush forests, wild life sanctuaries, rivers, rare species of birds, animals, traditional Ayurvedic treatment centers and historical remnants make Palakkad a noteworthy place to visit.

 

Places To Visit In Palakkad:

 

Palakkad Fort: Palakkad Fort is located in the heart of Palakkad town. It is a granite structure, built by Haider Ali in the year 1766. The fort is also known as Tippu’s fort. Tippu Sultan is the son of Haider Ali. It is a well preserved fort that features an open air auditorium called Rappadi. There is a large ground between the Fort and the town hall in Palakkad. This ground served as a staple for elephants and horses in Tippu Sultan’s army. You can see a small Hanuman temple inside the fort. There is also a children’s park on one side of the fort.


Malampuzha Dam: Malampuzha dam in Palakkad is one of the most beautiful tourist spots in Kerala. It is the largest reservoir in the state, which has the capacity to hold 8000 square meters of water. The picturesque hills of the Western Ghats serve as a backdrop for this dam. The dam is built across the river Malampuzha.


Malampuzha Dam Garden: Malampuzha dam garden is famously known as the Vrindavan of Kerala. The lush lawns, stunning flower beds, glittering pools and fountains make it a heaven on earth. Aquarium and Snake Park near the garden amuse the children very much. The Japanese style garden offers an enchanting appearance to the landscape. Thread garden, rock garden and the fantasy park are some other attractions in this place. The sculpture of Yakshi is an important art piece to see in Malampuzha dam garden.


Silent Valley National Park: Silent valley National Park is located in the district of Palakkad. It spreads over 89 kilometers along the Kunthipuzha river valley. It is home to lion tailed Macaque. It offers habitat to more than hundred species of butterflies, four hundred species of moths, Great Indian horn bill, Ceylon Frogmouth, tiger, elephant, leopard, wild boar, sambar, viper, Malabar Squirrel and Niligiri langur. There are several varieties of trees found in this park. An old tree in this park has a huge hollow that can hide up to twelve persons.


Parambikulam: Parambikulam wildlife sanctuary is situated in Palakkad district that has rich wildlife and vegetation. It is home to 39 species of mammals, 268 species of birds, more than sixty species of reptiles and more than hundred species of butterflies. Travancore flying squirrel, bonnet macaque, Sloth bear, Niligiri langur, panther and tiger are some of the important mammals found here. Teak, sandalwood, rosewood and neem are the main varieties of trees that can be seen here.


 

Reach By Air

There is no airport located at Palakkad. The nearest airport to Palakkad is the Cochin International Airport which is located at 160 kms. There is yet another airport located at Coimbatore.This airport is located at a distance of around 55 kilometers from Palakkad.

Reach By Rail

Palakkad has two stations. The main station which is a junction to all trains coming from different parts of the country is called the Palakkad junction.

Reach By Road

Palakkad is well connected to all towns and cities of Kerala through well laid roads and you can reach this city from any where.
